About Me

Namaste, I'm Haviwah.

One day not so long ago I was sitting in gridlocked traffic on my rickety old bicycle in the middle of Varanasi; India, sandwiched between a herd of water buffalo and a pack of shouting men who were carrying a dead body on a bamboo stretcher to the Ganges River to be burned. In that moment I realised how normal it all seemed and how at home I was in my surroundings, yet how insane I would have found it only a few short years earlier. I also knew that one day in the future I’d want to remember this moment and maybe even realise how bizarre it might truly have been, so when I got home I got to work typing up some thoughts on my computer.

Fast forward a handful of months through the wild ride that is life in India and I was finding within my heart that the longer I was away from Australia the more I was growing eager to capture some of these moments and share them with the many people I so dearly love but am geographically so distant from; it wasn’t long before Barefoot On Backroads came into being.

So then, who am I? I'm the husband of Wild Flower (the most breathtaking woman on our green planet), a father to Little Feather and Wild Foot (the sweetest, most adorable and cheekiest kids you'll ever get to know), a devotee of Jesus of Nazareth, a pilgrim in India, a reluctant nomad, a lover of music, a passionate organic gardener and a man with dirty toes.

I was born and raised in Australia and had lived there my whole live, until 2011 when my wife and I acted upon a deep stirring we'd felt in our hearts for a long time and decided to pack our entire lives into 3 bags and a guitar case and move to Varanasi; India, a city that our friends affectionately call 'the edge of the universe.' Three years on and we’re packing our bags once more to join our sister community in mountains of Northern Thailand. We'll be there to experience a different life, to grow and love and learn, and to help establish a different kind of community; a Jesus Devotional Community. Throughout all this we have the privilege of sharing our lives alongside an amazing group of sojourners who travel from the farthest reaches of the earth yet who share one and the same heart for love and truth and adventure.

My hope is that you'll enjoy this blog and who knows, maybe even stop by for a Chai some day.

All my hairiest love,
   - Haviwah Thundersong
